At Maalbar.dk, we’re closely tracking the evolution of climate accounting standards, and right now, the landscape is changing fast.
Even if COP30 in Belém, Brazil, can be criticised of many things, it is relevant to highlight one initiative that positively pushes for the next step for transparent, harmonised and value creating carbon accounting. Two global leaders; the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), unveiled their joint Action Agenda Plan to Accelerate Solutions (PaS).
This plan is a major step towards consistent, globally aligned, and practical CO₂eq reporting standards, providing a critical framework for businesses committed to sustainability.
With buy-in from both GHG Protocol and ISO, the Action Plan to Accelerate Solutions for harmonised global carbon accounting standards promises a unified approach to greenhouse gas reporting that businesses across all sectors can apply.
One global standard for CO₂eq reporting across all levels
Today’s approach to carbon footprint measurement leaves room for confusion over standards, which slows willingness, progress and true value of the effort. This new action plan addresses that challenge by attempting to harmonise standards across three core levels:
- Organisation-level CO₂eq accounting
- Product carbon footprinting
- Climate project and initiative assessments
The goal? To make carbon data reporting, verification, and reduction more accessible and consistent worldwide. This enables companies to comply with climate regulations, participate in carbon markets, and utilise climate insights to strengthen their sustainability performance.
The proposed timeline: Climate reporting infrastructure by 2028
The ambition is bold: by 2028 ISO and GHG protocol will have established the standards infrastructure necessary to build harmonised standards for climate emissions reporting that benefits the green transition in several ways:
- Offers a trusted method for calculating emissions
- Supports stronger climate legislation
- Helps organisations achieve verifiable CO₂eq reductions
Why this matters to your business
For organisations working with carbon accounting, ESG reporting or reduction targets, the proposed harmonisation of standards can only be assumed to lighten the communication burden and facilitate smoother development and progress.
At Målbar, we are proactively updating our platform to ensure continuous compatibility with the international standards.
By working with Målbar, your company gains access to a platform that is:
- Aligned with GHG Protocol and the underlying standards for accounting for scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions
- Developed around the relevant GHG protocol guidelines, so you can focus on your area of expertise – the activities of your business – and let the GHG tool calculate and categorise emissions
- Designed for accurate, transparent CO₂eq reporting
- Built to support your sustainability strategy
- Built with a focus on impact to support your reduction projects and focus your efforts
A crucial step towards the green transition
At Målbar we were much welcome this partnership between the GHG Protocol and ISO. With the leaders of the agenda pushing for standard harmonisation, we are moving towards a future where companies across the globe can spend their time on actual reductions and transition, rather than discussing methods and comparisons – and this has always been the ambition for Målbar.
We’re excited to follow this work closely and translate it into practical solutions for our customers.
